Who is Annabel Sutherland?#4

Annabel Sutherland is a young and talented Australian cricketer who plays for the national women’s team as an all-rounder. She is also a key player for Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League and the Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League. She comes from a cricketing family, as her father James Sutherland was the CEO of Cricket Australia for 17 years and her brother Will Sutherland is a promising cricketer for Victoria and Melbourne Renegades.

Early life and career

Annabel Sutherland was born on 12 October 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. She started playing cricket at a young age, inspired by her father and brother. She attended Carey Baptist Grammar School, where she excelled in both cricket and basketball. She made her debut for the Melbourne Renegades in the inaugural season of the Women’s Big Bash League in 2016/17, when she was only 15 years old. She became the youngest player to feature in the tournament at that time.

She also represented Australia at the under-15 and under-19 levels, and was part of the squad that won the 2018 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in New Zealand. In April 2019, she was awarded a contract with the National Performance Squad by Cricket Australia ahead of the 2019/20 season.

International career

In January 2020, Sutherland was named in Australia’s squads for the 2020 Australia women’s Tri-Nation Series and the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. She made her Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) debut for Australia against England in the tri-series on 1 February 2020. She scored 22 runs off 11 balls and took one wicket in her first match.

She was also part of the Australian team that won the T20 World Cup on home soil, beating India by 85 runs in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. She played in four matches in the tournament, scoring 32 runs and taking two wickets. In April 2020, Cricket Australia awarded Sutherland with a central contract ahead of the 2020/21 season.

She made her Women’s One Day International (WODI) debut for Australia against New Zealand on 3 October 2020. She scored 35 runs and took one wicket in her first match. She has since played in three WODIs, scoring 52 runs and taking two wickets.

In August 2021, Sutherland was named in Australia’s squad for their series against India, which included a one-off day/night Test match as part of the tour. She made her Test debut on 30 September 2021, for Australia against India. She scored 19 runs and took one wicket in her first Test match.

In January 2022, Sutherland was named in Australia’s squad for their series against England to contest the Women’s Ashes. She scored her maiden Test century on 23 June 2023, batting at number eight and making an unbeaten 137 runs off 228 balls. She shared a record-breaking partnership of 170 runs with Kim Garth for the ninth wicket, helping Australia to post a total of 476 runs in their first innings. She also took two wickets in England’s first innings, finishing with match figures of three for 97.

Personal life

Sutherland is currently studying commerce at Monash University. She is also an ambassador for Cricket Victoria’s Growing Cricket for Girls program, which aims to increase female participation and engagement in cricket across Victoria. She is dating fellow cricketer Josh Philippe, who plays for Western Australia and Sydney Sixers.

Sutherland is a fan of the Melbourne Demons in the Australian Football League and the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association. She enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending time with her family and friends. She has a pet dog named Archie.
